Why the Rolled Towel Works Until About Lunchtime
By 3 PM the ache is back, the cushion you bought last year is under your desk, and there is a bath towel rolled up behind you doing the job instead.
The towel is not the embarrassing part of this story. It is the useful part.
Almost everyone who ends up rolling a towel, a fleece, or a paper towel roll behind their lower back got there the same way. They bought something first. A cushion off Amazon for twenty-two dollars. A pillow that came bundled with a chair. Something with a strap. The usual conclusion is that nothing works, that back support is marketing, and that this is just what sitting for eight hours feels like now.

How it feels. Better, and slightly odd. Most people describe the first hour with a towel as sitting up without having to think about sitting up.

Stage 2. Lunchtime, when the shape goes
What happens. Terry cloth is a stack of loops with air between them. Load compresses the air out. What happens. The support is now flat, so your lower back is doing the work that the towel was doing. You are holding a position with muscle instead of resting against a shape.

Is this not just a firmer cushion?

Will it flatten like the last one?
The shell is a rigid polymer, not a compressible fill. That is the specific failure the design is built against.
It is 4.3 inches, will it push me forward?

Will it slide down when I stand up?

Does it get hot?
